Synopsis:

Ellaine Greene has simple desires. She just wants to do her best as the event coordinator for the local aquarium, to support environmental conservation efforts, and to keep immature man-children out of her life.

So when a major donor to the aquarium demands Ellaine find a magician for her granddaughter’s birthday party, all she can imagine is a long line of card chuckers and coin flippers wearing cheesy sequined vests.

Instead, she gets Xander Hollatz, a sophisticated, powerful man in a crisp suit, with nimble fingers and a warm smile.

He’s the man for the job, no doubt. And, to her surprise, she realizes he might be the man for her, too. Will she let her doubts get in the way of their feelings for each other?

And when everything goes wrong at the birthday party, will he be able to perform a miracle to save the day?

Sleight of Hand #1: Private Performance is a 17,000-word novella, introducing readers to Ellaine and Xander’s passionate and tender romance, to the fascinating wildlife inhabiting the aquarium, and to the mysterious world of professional magicians.

Review – Private Performance:

This is a book about love and magic. Not going to lie, I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it – not being a huge fan of magic. I think the science behind the magic is interesting, how magicians can trick the brain to see or not see things, but that’s about it. So when I picked up this series, I was a little skeptical. I can tell you with full confidence my worries were unfounded.

We meet Ellaine – an event coordinator for the city aquarium. She’s my kind of girl, the I-can-be-happy-all-by-myself kind of girl. I like her. She’s got a good job – ones she loves but she’s got a major problem on her hands. The aquarium needs to secure funding and the only way to do that is for Ellaine to find a magician for the granddaughter of a major donor.

What I envisioned as the magician for this party, a tall skinny guy wearing a sequenced vest, large floppy hat and a faded black cape. The magician Ellaine finds is anything but. Enter Xander Hollatz. Tall muscular, muscular guy with a warm smile and crisp suit, damaged and carrying his own baggage, Xander just wants to make kids happy and find happiness himself. He’s tasked with saving the day when everything goes horribly wrong on the day of the party and promises not to let Ellaine, the birthday girl or the aquarium down.

Ellaine has her doubts about him and men in general. But when he offers to give Ellaine a private performance, is he good enough to save the aquarium and convince Ellaine to give him a try?

With the backdrop of beautiful scenery, Private Performance is a novella to introduce readers to Resse Galloway’s work, and I think it’s a fantastic idea. Reese’s writing style and obvious love and interest in magic keeps the reader engaged. With unique and straightforward plot, Resse does an excellent job of creating multi-layered characters with real emotion and depth.

I recommend this book. It’s a super cute love story that you can read in one sitting.

Synopsis:

Ellaine Greene has a new man in her life, the famous magician Xander Hollatz. He’s ripped, kind, and mysterious — nothing like her ex-husband. He has even volunteered to perform at her aquarium’s annual fundraising gala. But she’s still having trouble leaving the past behind, especially when her ex shows up to beg for money.

Before the new couple knows it, someone’s trying to break into Xander’s mansion to steal the secrets of his many famous illusions. Ellaine’s ex becomes their prime suspect. But maybe it’s actually the up-and-coming street magician they’ve befriended. Or maybe it’s even someone from Xander’s mysterious past.

Whoever the thief is, if he uncovers and reveals the secret of Xander’s newest illusion for the fundraiser, the event will be a disaster. Ellaine may lose her job.

And there’s a still greater question: Is this feeling they share together just lust — or is it something more?

Find out in this 74,000-word book, the second volume in the Sleight of Hand series.

Review – Repeat Performance:

We met Ellaine Greene in Book 1, Private Performance. Now, she’s got a new attitude and a new man in her life, the famous magician, Xander Hollatz. Everything seems to be looking up for Ellaine, except for one annoying problem – her ex husband. He’s down and out on his luck – again and shows up to beg for money.

Finally ready to move on with their lives, Ellaine and Xander try to put her ex husband and his past behind them. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy for either of them. Xander’s past quickly begins to close in on them as well.

The famous magician has volunteered to perform at the aquarium’s annual fundraising gala and the media is ecstatic about his return to the world of magic after a long and unexplained absence. When Xander’s house is broken into, it seems like Ellaine’s ex understands the opportunity he may have to exploit her new lover.

Time is running out for these two. If the thief manages to expose Xander’s grand finale for the fundraising gala, there’s no doubt the aquarium will go under and Ellaine and all the wonderful animals she loves will be out on the street.

No matter who the thief is, Ellaine and Xander will have to work together to save the aquarium and their relationship.

I liked this book, and I recommend it for anyone that likes magic or would like to have a
